Securing the AI Era: Why We Raised $150M Series C and Where Data Security Goes From Here

Ron Reiter
Co-Founder and CTO

Today marks a defining milestone in Sentra’s journey. I am thrilled to share that Sentra has officially closed a $150 million Series C funding round, led by Capital One Ventures.

When we founded Sentra, our goal was simple yet ambitious: to give enterprises true clarity and control over their most valuable asset: their data. Reaching this milestone is a huge testament to the relentless work of our global team, the trust of our enterprise customers, and the shared vision of our investors.

While a funding round of this magnitude is a fantastic validation, funding is ultimately fuel, not the finish line. This capital gives us the horsepower to move faster, think bigger, and accelerate our mission. We are scaling our engineering and product efforts globally, deepening our presence across North America and Europe, and expanding our platform capabilities to meet the staggering data security challenges of the AI era.

I couldn't be more excited for what lies ahead for Sentra, our team, and the customers who trust us to keep their data safe.

The Sentra Journey: From Cloud DSPM to an All-Encompassing Agentic Data Security Platform

When we started Sentra, the cloud security landscape had a massive blind spot. Organizations were moving at breakneck speed to IaaS environments like AWS, Azure, and GCP, creating cloud infrastructure faster than security teams could track it. The initial, burning need was simple: compliance and visibility. Companies needed to know where their sensitive data lived in the public cloud, leading to the birth of Data Security Posture Management (DSPM).

However, sensitive data never stays in one place. As enterprise architectures grew increasingly complex, securing IaaS alone wasn't enough. Sentra quickly evolved from a point-solution DSPM tool into a comprehensive, unified Data Security Platform. Today, Sentra protects data everywhere it lives:

  • IaaS & PaaS: Cloud databases, object stores, and custom application backends.
  • SaaS & Collaboration Platforms: Critical enterprise tools like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and SaaS suites.
  • On-Premises & Hybrid Storage: Network fileshares, legacy databases, and private infrastructure.
  • Endpoints & Developer Tools: Protecting data right at the developer and employee boundary.

Along this journey, we expanded our platform to tackle the full lifecycle of data security challenges:

Security Domain

Core Focus & Enterprise Value

Data Access Governance (DAG)

Mapping identities (both human and AI agents) to data access, enforcing least-privilege policies.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

Preventing sensitive data leakage into public environments, generative AI models, or unauthorized apps.

Data Hygiene & Remediation

Eliminating shadow data, redundant files, and exposed hardcoded secrets automatically.

It All Starts with Discovery and Classification

Through all this evolution, one core truth has remained unchanged: you cannot secure what you do not know you have.

Every DLP policy, access governance framework, or compliance mandate fails if the underlying classification engine is inaccurate or incomplete. You cannot write an effective policy if your tool misclassifies source code as random text or misses proprietary customer data buried inside an unindexed bucket.

At Sentra, everything we build starts with the exact same foundational engine: unmatched, continuous, highly accurate discovery and classification. By combining small language models (SLMs) with deep contextual intelligence, we ensure that every security decision across IaaS, SaaS, or on-prem is grounded in absolute truth about data sensitivity.

Why Sentra is More Critical Than Ever: The "Assume Breach" Era

If recent history has taught us anything, it's that traditional perimeter defense is dead. We have entered a paradigm where every enterprise must assume breach.

The threat landscape is changing at a pace we have never seen before, driven by escalating vulnerability rates, supply chain attacks, and the democratization of offensive cyber capabilities.

1. High-Profile Exploits Happening in Real Time

Last week, the news broke that Binance suffered the largest cyber theft in history, with hackers stealing over $6.3 billion in digital assets across multiple blockchains. Meanwhile, we recently saw security compromises affecting developer ecosystems like official Claude VS Code extensions, combined with a skyrocketing overall rate of total CVEs such as critical execution vulnerabilities like php2shell.

2. The Asymmetry of AI-Powered Offense

The rise of autonomous AI agents and sophisticated LLM tooling has fundamentally altered the threat dynamic. In the past, executing a complex multi-stage attack required nation-state-level capabilities and resources. Today, AI agents allow novice, clueless hackers to wield offensive cyber capabilities that rival advanced persistent threats (APTs). The barrier to entry for executing rapid, automated multi-vector breaches has effectively dropped to zero.

3. Blast Radius and Data Hygiene are the Only Real Defenses

When external perimeters fail and accounts inevitably get compromised, your data security strategy dictates whether a breach is a minor incident or a catastrophic headline. This makes two things critical:

  • Instant Data Hygiene (Secrets Exposure): Attackers scan breached environments for hardcoded API keys, database credentials, and cloud tokens within seconds. Knowing where secrets live before a breach happens, and identifying exactly which secrets were exposed immediately after an account compromise, is the difference between containing an incident and losing $6 billion.
  • Data Access Governance (Minimizing Blast Radius): When an employee or AI agent identity is compromised, what can the attacker actually reach? If identities have over-permissioned, ungoverned access across SaaS and cloud stores, the blast radius is massive. Strict, continuous access governance ensures that even during an account takeover, the attacker's visibility into sensitive data is strictly constrained.

We also apply this "assume breach" mindset to our own architecture. Sentra's scanning engine runs entirely inside the customer’s environment, ensuring that sensitive data never leaves your perimeter. Only metadata is transmitted. This zero-data-friction design is our most credible proof point and directly addresses why enterprises can trust a vendor with their most sensitive assets.

Building the Future of Agentic Data Security

As enterprise AI adoption accelerates, AI agents are quickly becoming the busiest consumers of enterprise data. Ensuring these autonomous systems only reach the data they are explicitly authorized to see is the defining cybersecurity challenge of the next decade.

This $150 million Series C investment allows Sentra to stay at the absolute forefront of this shift. We are committed to building the security architecture that enables enterprises to adopt AI aggressively without sacrificing data control.

To our customers, partners, and the entire Sentra team: thank you for being part of this journey. The best part of the Sentra story is still ahead of us. Now, let's get back to building!
